When Tom asked me to take this project I was happy to step in. I learned that Knowbility is a non-profit organization specializing in accessibility consulting, training and advocacy to support the independence of people with disabilities. They, along with VSA Arts of Texas, put on the Sight.Sound.Soul event each year, making sure this art-centric event is accessible to everyone including folks who may have a disability.

This year the event occurred on the evening of September 12, 2007, at La Zona Rosa. Each of three terrific local musicians, backed up by their bands, John Pointer, Lavelle White and Malford Milligan, performed a set. During Lavelle's and Malford's sets two visual artists, Kevin Brown and James Abbott, creating two large paintings inspired by the music.

The whole event was recorded by Public Access Community Television (PACT) to be shown on the local cable access channel. In addition I shot the two visual artists in action using Tom's HD camera, the Sony HVR-V1U, and then sped them up in post to be shown as time-lapsed video.

Using Apple's Final Cut Studio 2 and all the raw video footage, I created one video for each performer, added opening credits and titles. To aid those who cannot hear, I added lyric captions for each song. For those who cannot see, I recorded audio describing the opening credits. At the very start of each video is an audio of the name of the musician and the song they are performing. This way the video can be quickly identified by the listener. Time-lapse video showing each of the two visual artists as they created the paintings made up the last two segments.

Next I created an account for the customer at blip.tv and uploaded the videos to that account. Giving Knowbility their own account allows them to add more videos later, if they wish, and control the many features offered by this free hosting service.

Below are the five short event videos. The blip.tv Flash player will show all five videos in succession or you can click on the "Guide" link, then the "Episode" tab and select any one of the five videos.

WEB ACCESSIBILITY

Knowbility is all about enabling the web for people with disabilities. Since Flash isn't very "accessible", I made the video available using links below so that the videos can be played in the QuickTime player, which is more accessible than most. The assumption here is that anyone who has accessibility concerns can have their web browser configured to use QuickTime for any video files.
