Yep, I agree with Simon. In fact I went out and bought a new iPhone a few weeks ago. Love it.
I'm not having the problems they are complaining about at all.

I use Ecamm's CAll Recorder however I'm using a iMac to capture the interviews (or a MacbookPro alternatively).
For Windows you'll need something like Pamela. Use Google to find a number of Skype recorders for audio and video.
You'll need to do some testing and be careful you do not overload your PC. Older PCs with low memory will not perform ell. Unless you're just capturing very short calls. But if the skype calls are an hour or more be careful about overloading the PC to a point where it bombs.

You will want to dedicated a PC to the Skype capture and not be running things like Outlook and having multiple Explorer windows open.
You 'can' do all that at the same time but to be safe I would not - again especially with anything but a newer PC with plenty of ram 4-8GB to be safe.
You'll need the extra performance later for editing.

Skype allows you to dial a traditional land line however the quality of those connections are not always great. It can be acceptable but not as good as a land line calling another land line. If you're call another machine that is running skype and you capture 'that audio' it will be amazingly clear - like CD quality. So when possible have the same person using skype on their end versus using skype to dial them via phone line. Always capture (record) audio in WAV format versus MP3.

When I record audio from a phone line I use different equipment. It's something called a digital hybrid and those run about $700-$1100 a piece.

That's a coolidea Sherry and it's THAT kind of think that is necessary to move forward. The legacy of the electric industry is to provide solid consistent power and plan ahead for growth. Well sorta like the old ATT business model. Just keep promising what will happen but for now let's focus on what's important - generate reliable power. Makes sense but it just doesn't set the stage for real innovation. I think Len Hause is 'spot on' in his observations in working with utilities the last couple of years. They just don't really get it and have other priorities. The innovation around smart grid technology will come from outside of their industry and likely the consumers themselves. If a utility would send out a steady Internet signal letting people and machines know during every minute of the day when the best time is to run heavy electrical loads at home (say AC, dishwasher, clothes washer and dryer ...) then the consumer can set up strategies for running those devices at low demand times reducing their bill AND reducing the peak load problems. Everyone wins. We just need need some entity to make that kind of information available on the Internet via web browser and or API calls. You get the idea. It ain't that complicated. Folks would do it manually until they had cheap devices at home that could receive the digital info and automatically adjust when loads are run.

I hear you. I'm curious though how in the long run the supposed 'antenna' problem will affect Apple. Except for the PR aspects the sales of the new iPhone seems pretty strong still. We'll see. I have the new iPhone and it seems to work fine to me (except for the poor ATT service in Boulder). But in Austin it's rock solid.

Tom, what a provocative and well-thought out post!

Great research also!

So...now I'm wondering if our own Perdenales utility fiasco -- were it simply leveled and reinvented completely, could not become the first USA such complete redesign experience.

It serves a huge, outlying and partly-rural population and they are all people who would welcome almost anything, I'm betting, beyond what they've had in the expensive (!!) Texas brand of "business as usual."

If LBJ could get electricity to them in the first place, wouldn't it be something if they could be first on the block to get the benefits technology can now deliver early-adopters.

Thank you Vinnie for taking the time to personally respond to my blog post. It's rather delightful to have an author respond and It's good to see you walk the talk with regards to the technology. I realize B&N and other retail only sell 5% of books like yours but I think I was 'hopeful' that in Boulder I'd find a copy quick. I just had a hankering to get started on your book. I am real curious about the internal process for Kindle and iPad. Sounds like it's frustrating for you as an author in many ways. You've been me a lot of new insights too from your comments. Yea ... I suspected publishers are still pretty focused on traditional channels. Oh well ... hey we're both just part of this large transition going on right now for the new economy. I think it's always been like that for me since I was involved with an AI spinoff out of MIT in the 80's.

Vinnie would you be interested in having me do a video interview of you for www.EnterpriseLeadership.org about your book and related topics? I would be honored.

Thanks, as an author it is heartening - and bothersome - the effort you had to go through to get the book. First off, the Kindle version came out last Thursday. The iPad,ibookstore version will be available in a few days. Like you I would have thought the ebook versions would have come out before the hardback. Or that amazon and B&N.com would have allowed preorders of the digital version especially for a tech focused book.

As far as B&N not having it locally. the reality is less than 5% of books like mine get bought in a retail stores - and those in tech heavy markets like Silicon Valley. 80% of biz books like mine are bought in bulk by case studies in the book (as you will see many profiles of innovators) and for speaking engagements. They order in chunks of 10, 50, 200. Then come e-outlets like amazon which make up likely 15% of the volume (and over time more of the total volume).

That has been a revelation to me through this process. While we all want the social customer to become more prominent, the traditional channels are actually still dominant. Worse, they don't get reflected in amazon rankings. of course, my publisher loves the revenue from the traditional channels - social customer, who's that? :)

Hi Tom,Thanks for sharing this. I'm always interested in process. In step 4, who is reviewing the recording (MP3)? Is it the interviewee or the reviewer or some other person.Same thing in step 5; who's doing the review? What is looked for in the review? Is there a review report? Are changes ever made as a result of the review? Also, step 4 and 5 have almost the same name. Step 4 might be called "pre-post prep" perhaps.

Hey, Tom! Your Len Hause video appears to be broken ... on Blip site, as well. Whassup? And do you have a decent digital headshot of Len that you could e-mail to me? I wanna make a cool Smart-Grid-themed Twitter background for him.

For film related, Jette's work at Slackerwood is a great read and lots of useful info. B-Side's calendaring is an absolute life saver for any fest, especially SXSW, since you can customize your own, see what your overlaps are and print out your own handy schedule.

I'd also note on the Fantastic Fest midnight screenings get there super early as well as anything playing at the Ritz. Be sure to go to the Drafthouse karaoke party as well!

I’d also note on the Fantastic Fest midnight screenings get there super early as well as anything playing at the Ritz. Be sure to go to the Drafthouse karaoke party as well!

Slackerwood is crossposting a film fest survival guide this week.

I'd add for film folks not sure how to schedule to pick your must-see films only playing once first, then fill in the rest. Or use BSide's Festival Genius to help you figure it out at http://2009.bside.com/sxsw/.

Great post!

For days walking around downtown, there is lots of concrete so wear shoes accordingly. Also, an extra pair of shoes to wear works great with all the walking around going on, a new/different pair of shoes can do wonders when switching up every other day, etc.,

Drink lots of water during the day!

Don't forget to charge your cel at night. Best way to keep up is cel as so many networking events, parties, get posted last minute, etc.,
Be sure and attend pre-SXSWi opening night party and official opening night party. Great way to meet a lot of people you will be running into.

If you like Sushi, Kyoto on 4th & Congress has half price sushi between 6:00pm-6:45pm.

There is a huge amount of restaurants downtown, most cater more for the dinner crowd, though there is a ton during day for pizza, tacos and light eating. Lots of coffee shops around the convention center w/ free wi-fi.
